How it all began

When we launched the company in early 2004, It's About Time became the first and only full-service wedding planning business in Massachusetts to specialize in same-sex weddings. Now, we produce weddings of all kinds – nontraditional, intercultural, “green" weddings, and even second weddings – as well as non-profit conferences, galas and fundraising events. With every event and every client, we’re dedicated to producing meaningful and memorable events for our community while being a vehicle for social change.

Bernadette Smith and Lisette Garcia (who has since left the business) started It's About Time soon after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled on November 17, 2003 that it was illegal to deny marriage rights to gays and lesbians. Before the ruling, Bernadette had attended a commitment ceremony in South Carolina where the event’s DJ made derogatory comments to the guests and partners. That’s when It’s About Time was born. Her first idea was to help gay and lesbian couples navigate a historically straight industry, but now Bernadette helps all couples looking for something a little different than the norm.

A snapshot of the team

Founder and President Bernadette Smith brings an extensive background in coordinating large multi-day conferences, workshops and special events for non-profit organizations. She has worked on about 45 weddings and countless other events in the past four years. She loves her job, loves meeting new people and especially loves the joy her creations bring to others. Bernadette freely admits that she'd be lost without her smart phone, is addicted to email and probably doesn't take enough vacations, but knows this helps her be highly efficient and responsive to her clients. She is a proud AmeriCorps alum, has an undergrad degree in Film, an MBA and spends her free time volunteering, traveling, camping and working on her home.

Jennifer Coveney is addicted to reality television shows about weddings. Ever since she was a little girl, she always dreamed about weddings and being a wedding planner. Although her passion, exuberance and fun energy is obvious to all who meet Jen, she combines that with a keen eye for detail and highly professional and organized manner. She joined the company in 2007, part-time, and has been delighted to coordinate weddings ever since.
